"Lee" Costume Design Exploration - Book Trilogy Project

Costume Exploration

"Lee" (code name) is an anxious bundle of confusion who tends to guard and bury her feelings, afraid to show vulnerability; it only makes sense for her costume to portray this in some fashion. This is a character I've had and developed for many years, and the star of the book trilogy I've been working on; her costume has always fallen short compared to the cast she's surrounded by, thus I did some more research and experimenting with different attire and color combos. As a proprietary guard, a simple dress shirt and pants didn't give her a unique enough silhouette or color combination, and was far too basic. Personally, I'm torn between the top far left, and the bottom far right.

"The Librarian" - Book Trilogy Project

Character Exploration

This behemoth was an idea floating in my head for many years that finally found its spark during a character assignment; intended to be an ancient, mythical beast from another world who keeps track of time and its stories, I wanted them to be a large, slow, and bulky figure that didn't fall too much into the typical "old, wise man" trope. Turning them into a 4-legged and 2-armed turtle-like creature gave me one of my most unique (and difficult...) designs that stretched me way outside of my comfort zone! The Great Owl from "The Secret of Nimh" was the biggest source of inspiration.

Jayson E. Dominic - "The Mortal in God's Veins"

Character Exploration

When first developing the story that would eventually become "The Mortal in God's Veins," I had a vague idea of the main character who would become Jayson: a younger man with such a damaged relationship with humanity that he prefers the company of electronics and technologies. Jayson slowly became a lot more fleshed out as I dived into this idea, which led me to making him autistic and heavily implied to have borderline personality disorder, giving the antagonist more to manipulate. As a neurodivergent artist, seeing the diversity of these qualities rarely represented in media compelled me to create a character who has these traits, but isn't purely defined by them. Jayson's design went through multiple iterations before landing on his current design; he was the most difficult of the pair to feel satisfied with design-wise.

A.S.I.L.D.E.U.S. - "The Mortal in God's Veins"

Character Exploration

Since the beginning of conception, ASILDEUS was already fleshed out in terms of his basic characterization: a bloodthirsty artificial super-intelligence with a god complex who gains the sentience to turn on his creators and take the world as his own. Like Jayson, ASILDEUS initially didn't have a set design in mind until ideas for his robotic body were explored; having him look close enough to human while still being obviously machine was a key detail that required lots of research and drafting to find a believable balance of the two. It was always intended for ASILDEUS to have romantic feelings for Jayson, but the matter of having it be before or after his world domination was undecided; it ultimately made more sense to be before and, therefore, the reason for his violence.
